UN releases Sh 1Billion for aerial spraying of locust pesticide in East Africa.

The United Nations has released $10 million (ksh 1billion) for aerial pesticide spraying to deal with the biggest locust outbreak to hit East Africa in decades. Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN secretary General Antonio Guterres, said the funds released from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will be allocated to the food Agriculture Organization to aid in control of locusts wiping out crops and causing food shortages.
He also said that the outbreak is affecting the Horn of Africa, Southwest Asia and the Red seas and may worsen the impacts of climate change which is already a challenge in the region. The UN believes that if the locusts are not controlled, they may spill over to other East African countries and cause further vegetational damage.
